The dog is deemed to be man’s best friend, but would you believe that there’s a certain town in Southern China that makes dogs a delectable delicacy? Watch the video as Vice reports on this matter.

Yulin, Southern China, a town well-known for their annual Dog Meat Festival held every summer solstice, has been the object of criticism among Chinese animal rights activists and people from all parts of the world. In spite of being prosperous for the past decades, it has preserved it’s tradition of eating dog meat. Locals say that dog meat is flavorful and nutritious, and that it keeps you healthy. That’s what they say. But what do health experts say?

Dogs are one of the primary carriers of a particular disease called Rabies, also known as Hydrophobia. You’ll never know if one is infected unless the common symptoms are evident. Humans can be infected if bitten by a rabid dog or any animal, especially those that are astray. Health experts also say that there’s a big possibility that humans or other animals can get infected through the rabid animals’ saliva. They warn us that we should not let animals lick our face or any open wound we might have.

This is just what entails the main issue of why most people condemn the town’s practice. It’s mainly about dog cruelty. Animal activists say that it’s totally illegal and unregulated. Some of the dogs the market sells are stolen and sick. Locals aver that there’s nothing wrong in eating dog meat. It’s just the same as eating other types of meat like pork, beef and chicken.

Government authorities should intervene on this matter so as to regulate it, at least, to prevent any risk of serious health problems and to rescue man’s best friend from being served at the dinner table.
