Have you seen this kind of art before? It’s the art of pasting papers together on a mold to form a figure. It’s called Paper Mache. During my elementary school days, I remember doing that kind of thing in my Arts subject, but not a dragon. One thing I found out, it’s so fun and interesting. Actually, it’s one of the in-demand products in the international market today. Paper Mache products are normally outsourced in Asian countries like the Philippines and China, if I’m not mistaken. It’s true that it looks easy to make one, but you’ve got to have your imagination flowing to be able to create something worthy to be called a masterpiece, haha! Well, it’s just a matter of practice, right?
In this video, the artist shows us the step-by-step procedure in making a Paper Mache Equinox Dragon. Again, it looks so easy, but as what a famous saying says, “It’s when the rubber meets the road.” The artist has already perfected his craft unlike us, but at least, we can get great ideas watching it. He goes on to prepare the main body frame first with all the reinforcements and contours. By the way, in mythology, there are two types of dragon – the Asian dragon and the European dragon. Both have distinct features and embellishments, especially the Asian one. So, obviously, the artist is making the European depiction of the great beast.
After assembling the body frame, the artist now begins to give it some character like putting all the body components: the spines, scales and everything that makes up a dragon. Everything is intricately put together to make it look realistic. That’s the secret of all kinds of arts. It should capture people’s attention and interest. And there he goes, after some finishing touches, voila! You now have your fearsome Equinox Dragon.
